Durban North’s Jackie rises to third at Red Bull Quicksand event

DURBAN North resident Jackie Moore finished third in the women’s race at this year’s inaugural Red Bull Quicksand tournament along Durban’s New Beach.

The beach obstacle course race landed in South Africa for the very first time this year and saw more than 500 runners take on the man-made ‘sandcastle’ obstacles.

The 1.6km event tested opponents on their endurance, agility and speed as they proved how hard one mile can be.

“It was an awesome event but definitely one of the hardest 1.6km races I’ve ever done,” Moore said. “Running on the sand is never easy, but the vibe created was awesome, and just being a part of the inaugural event was pretty special.”

Moore, who is a regular contender on the obstacle course racing (OCR) circuit, said this event offered something different.

“I actually entered the day entries opened. I know Ryan Scott who was the announcer on the day, and he had mentioned it and how it involved beach running and big ramps, and that’s all I needed to hear, to be honest. I’ve always been a competitive-matured person; if you put me on the start line of a race, I’m going to race and give it my all,” she said.

The mother of two trains at Adventure Obstacle Training (AOT) and said she’s benefitted from training with Claude and Trish Eksteen.

“I first got into OCR seven years ago, and I’ve been lucky to train with Claude and Trish Eksteen, who are such massive inspirations. What I love about OCR and the training, in particular, is that each session we do it different, and while sometimes you get more accustomed to certain obstacles, it never gets easy. The AOT crew are always encouraging and motivating you on whatever course you are on, and the community vibe really makes you grow as an athlete,” she said.

Moore, who competes in the Special Ops category in OCR, is now gearing up for a Warrior Race in October in Johannesburg.
