CPF drive awareness campaign after uMhlanga rape cases

The cases were reported in June and April this year and allegedly involved the spiking of drinks at local restaurants.

THE Durban North/uMhlanga CPF, together with the Durban North SAPS, the North Durban Victim Support Team and various stakeholders, held an awareness campaign on Chartwell Drive recently after two cases of rape were reported in the uMhlanga village area.

The cases were reported in June and April this year and allegedly involved the spiking of drinks at local restaurants.

Sadiyya Haffajee, coordinator of the support team, said the awareness drive was prompted by the two rape cases that were opened at the Durban North police station.

“The combined visible operation was successful in that it brought attention to the need for vigilance while going out, even to places considered harmless. In general, the increased visibility and security was well received with restaurants being pleased that a proactive approach was being taken which will allow patrons to enjoy themselves while feeling secure,” she said.

Haffajee again urged residents to avoid naming and shaming alleged suspects and restaurants as this could damage the case.

“While we do feel the anger and share the devastation of what has happened in the reported cases, we have to allow the law to follow its course. Naming and shaming suspects can hurt the victim’s case in court,” she said.
