Cameras could be the way forward to curb illegal dumping in Glenhills

Last month, Ward 110 councillor, Aamir Abdul formed a task team to address the longstanding issue of dumping in the area which has worsened in recent months.

THE installation of security cameras could be one of the ways to address illegal dumping on Malacca Road and Ryde Place.

That is the feeling of Ward 110 councillor, Aamir Abdul.

Last month, at a public meeting held at Rivers Church, Abdul formed a task team to address the longstanding issue of dumping in the area which has worsened in recent months.

“I do feel cameras are certainly an integral part of the overall strategy to address the issue of illegal dumping in Malacca Road. Currently, it is extremely difficult to obtain sufficient evidence to prosecute offenders due to many reasons, such as intimidation. Cameras will certainly be a step in the right direction in order to bolster cases against anyone caught illegally dumping,” he said.

He added the task team is made up of residents from the area, members of the ratepayers’ association and the ward committee.

“I feel the role of the task team is integral in creating and fostering a good working relationship between the community and the municipality, and is ultimately envisioned to be a committee that will assist to maintain the measures that will be put into place to address the issue of illegal dumping in the area.

“We will soon be holding our first meeting with the task team. Currently, the ward committee has not been formally inaugurated, however, the inauguration is set to take place this week. In addition to this, other meetings are being held with relevant department officials to allocate resources to this issue and work together with the task team,” he said.
