La Lucia learners set to show their motion about the ocean

Supporters of the show are asked to donate a 5L bottle of water, either store-bought or filled from home, which will go to the community of Tongaat. The college has partnered with the Tongaat Civic Association.

ABOUT 100 learners from Crawford International La Lucia College will showcase their dance moves at the college’s latest dance production, Oceans Rise, next month.

Speaking to Northglen News, Megan Lamb – dance teacher and producer of the show – said the name tied in with the theme of the show which is all about diving, underwater marine life and protecting the ocean from pollution and the like.

“This is a joint effort, where every grade gets to participate even if it’s behind the scenes. We’ve also decided to collect water for the residents of Tongaat who have been without for over 100 days.

Just like how ripples form when you throw a stone into a river, we all need to create the same ripple effect by helping our neighbours,” said Lamb.

Supporters of the show are asked to donate a 5L bottle of water, either store-bought or filled from home, which will go to the community of Tongaat. The college has partnered with the Tongaat Civic Association.

“You can drop off the water with guards at the front entrance or you can bring them to the show where we will have people collect,” she added.

Speaking on behalf of the matric learners who take dance as a subject, Jordyn Lombaard and Miashca Naidoo said preparation for the show has been both exhausting and exciting.

“Trying to balance matric and workload with practice and other activities is difficult. We also have to look after our bodies really well prior to the show and make sure we are ready and fit for stage,” said Jordyn.

“We are so excited about the show because it’s the first one we’ll be doing without masks. The audience can actually see our facial expressions this time, and we’ll be able to breathe a lot better!” said Miashca.

Oceans Rise will feature many genres of dance including hip-hop, contemporary and Bollywood.

Each matric student has also been asked to perform a solo incorporating their own experiences.

These include balancing life during or after their parents’ divorce, gender-based violence, body positivity, grief and more.

Speaking about the community drive aspect of the show, the learners said they felt good to contribute to a worthy cause while putting on a performance.

“We can’t imagine how they must feel not having water for so many months. They’re our neighbours, and we can’t sit back and do nothing,” said Jordyn.

The show, which is supper-theatre style, takes place at the college on August 4 and 5, so take along your food and beverages with you. Tickets can be purchased through Quicket.
