VOLUNTEERS showed up in their numbers on Saturday in support of this year’s Street Store.
The Street Store helps hundreds of homeless people to have a dignified shopping experience, and Grace Family Church uMhlanga campus has partnered with the Denis Hurley Centre to host the event.
On Saturday, Grace Family Church’s uMhlanga campus played host to a sorting day where members from the church as well as local residents packed hundreds of boxes of clothes, footwear and toys for the homeless in Durban.
Dave Richter, a member of the church, said he was blown away by the support of the community.
“It has just been such a beautiful morning, seeing members of our congregation, local residents and family members pitch in to make a difference. People pledged their time to this super cause, and that in itself was a donation. We were initially worried that we wouldn’t have as many items for the Street Store as years gone by, but as word spread and the article appeared in Northglen News, the donations flooded in.
“We had a shipping container outside our uMhlanga campus where people could donate whatever they wished, and by the morning of our sorting day, it was packed full to the top. We are so grateful to all those who contributed. In previous years, the Street Store has served as many as 1 000 homeless in the city, and our target this year is to reach more vulnerable people,” he said.
The Street Store takes place on Saturday, June 4 at the Denis Hurley Centre.
