Community input key in fight against crime in north Durban

According to the Greenwood Park CPF Sub-Forum 5 there has been a spike in break-ins in the Glenhills area.

MEMBERS of the Greenwood Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sub-Forum 5, will host a community engagement event on Saturday, May 7 to discuss the spike in crime.

Chairman of the Sub-Forum, Mondli Mchunu said the event will also be a way for the community to meet with members of the Greenwood Park SAPS and fellow members of the CPF to discuss ongoing issues within the ward.

According to Mchunu there has been a spike in break-ins in the Glenhills area and an increase in contact crimes which were of concern.

“To fight crime we need community input and engagement. We would love to see more young people involved and the afternoon is really about highlighting what we do and introducing ourselves to the community. Some of the other issues we are facing is metal theft and the illegal shebeen in operation on Malacca Road,” Mchunu explained.

He added that the sub-forum would like to begin patrols in the area.

“With the escalation of crime the Greenwood Park SAPS says with winter approaching, the crime patterns shift to the early hours of the morning. Our goal is to begin patrols and ensure the community remains vigilant to stop any potential crimes. I urge residents within sub-forum 5 to come down and meet us on the day to find out what we are about,” he said.
Fellow sub-forum member and treasurer, Rowen David said the ultimate goal would be the installation of automatic number plate recognition cameras.

“Our goal is to bring the community closer together but also speak to their collective needs. Once we begin patrols and set up structures to help combat crime we would like to look at the possible installation of more number plate recognition cameras as one of the roads we cover, Rinaldo Road, is a major thoroughfare in and out of the area,” he said.
