Learning centre needs new premises in Durban North, uMhlanga

Rodger is looking for a school in uMhlanga or Durban North that is 2500 erf or bigger. The property should have 10 classrooms, two offices, a play area and 20 parking bays.

WHEN AMY Rodger founded the Khanyisa Developmental Centre in 2011, her aim was to create a learning environment for all children with special needs, no matter what.

Rodger has achieved her goal and is successfully running the centre with caters for 60 children which learning difficulties and special needs, however the centre is desperate for new premises.

An occupational therapist by profession, Rodger told Northglen News, that she had been searching for premises since last year, but they were either not suitable in size or the community objected as the suitable properties were in residential areas and called for rezoning.

“We currently located at the Durban Country Club short term and are so grateful to them for letting us use their premises, but we do need to find proper premises soon,” she said.

“We cater for children with special needs. Lots of schools have strict admission criteria but we have none. We want every child to get a chance to grow and learn and integrate into society,” said Rodger.

She added that 70 % of the children at the school have one diagnosis which is often followed by a secondary diagnosis. The secondary diagnosis often goes undiagnosed and is one of the factors limiting atypical children into getting into school.

“Most schools want children toilet trained which may seem like a normal requirement but with an atypical child, this is more complex,” she said.

She said other than the children needing support, their families also need love, support and care which is also something Khanyisa provides as well.

“It’s not just the children’s needs we have to cater for, it’s their family’s needs too. I ask anyone who knows of premises suitable for us to please assist,” she said.

“We are flexible and don’t want to be a nuisance in the community or potential neighbours. Please spare a thought for these children who need a learning environment,” she said.
