Volunteers needed for north Durban Knit-A-Thon event
The aim of the event is to crochet and knit as many items, including beanies, jerseys and blankets for the community of Bulwer.
EACH year members of St Martin’s Church in Durban North aim to make more than 200 beanies, blankets and other items to aid residents in rural Bulwer in the foothills of the Drakensberg.
Sharon Liebetrau of the church, said the event, the Knit-A-Thon is well supported each year.
She added the aim is to crochet and knit as many items, including beanies, jerseys and blankets for the community who often face the harsh winters with very little.
“We organised the first Knit-A-Thon in 2019 as a means of gathering beanies and other warm items for the community in Bulwer. Unfortunately we missed 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic and we were able to host one last year. Our aim is to make at least 200 beanies each year and as many other items as possible and last year we surpassed that number. We are hoping to go even bigger this year,” she said.

Liebetrau said the church was inviting everyone in the North Durban community to start knitting or crocheting for a cause.
“You don’t have to be a star knitter – it’s about the community getting together to make a difference in people’s lives. The Knit-A-Thon takes place at the church on Saturday, April 23. If you are unable to knit or crochet, do come along and learn or have fun making pompoms for the tops of the beanies. We also welcome all wool donations.
“We are also having a Winter Warmth collection for the people of Bulwer on the same weekend. If people could clear their closets of items they no longer have need of or if you are able to buy an item of clothing when out shopping we would be most grateful to receive such. We are needing blankets, jerseys, track suits, jackets, socks, gloves, scarves, socks, shoes for all ages,” she said.
For those who can’t make it on the day, residents can drop off items at the church office marked for Bulwer Outreach, she added.
Event Details
The Knit-A-Thon will take place on Saturday, April 23 from 8:00 to 17:00 in the courtyard at St Martin’s Church (12 Chelsea Drive). Bring along wool, knitting needles and friends. The church also welcomes any clothing and blanket donations for their Winter Warmth Campaign for Bulwer. The Knitathon will take place on the open patio/courtyard between the Church and Hall with Covi-19 protocols observed.
