New free outdoor gym for Durban North

Several gyms have been installed across the City and now, the Durban North community will be benefiting from the positive initiative.

CONSTRUCTION of the new outdoor gym at the Crusaders Sports Club grounds is well underway with work expected to be complete within the next two weeks.

The gym is part of the eThekwini Municipality Outdoor Gym Initiative which began in 2014 and was started in an effort to promote a healthy city and encourage residents to exercise.

Since its inception, several gyms have been installed across the City and now, the Durban North community will be benefiting from the positive initiative.

Ward councillor for the area, Shontel de Boer, said the decision to build the gym within the Crusaders Sports Club was because the club was well-used by the local community.

“Ward 36 already has an outdoor gym and I felt this was the perfect spot for another. Crusaders is also easily accessible for the north Durban community and families regularly walk and exercise here on a daily basis. The machines are simple, yet effective, have been designed to withstand the elements and access to the facilities will be free and available to everyone. Workers have already installed the machines and are now in the process of laying the paving,” she explained.

“The project has been well-received and used in other areas within Durban, and we hope that it will be just as successful in this community. One of the positives is that funding has been approved to install another gym within the ward and my hope is to place that gym in Whynotte Park off Umhlanga Rocks Drive. However, for that to happen the City needs to complete its realignment project of the road,” she said.

According to the eThekwini Municipality, plans are in place to roll out the outdoor gyms to all 110 wards.
