Durban North dental surgeon cycles for a purpose

A DURBAN North dental surgeon, who’s been in the profession for 35 years, will ride his seventh Cape Town Cycle Tour this weekend all in the name of charity.

An avid supporter for charitable causes, Ashwin Tularam has chosen Operation Smile as his beneficiary for 2022.

“I always support different charities through this event. The last ride was for the Reach For A Dream Foundation,” he said.

Tularam added that he chose Operation Smile as he was aware of the life-changing work they do, helping children and adults who are born with a cleft palate and cleft lip.

Not only does the dentist want to raise funds for Operation Smile but wants to also create awareness on the organisation.

“This is a free service given to whoever requires it and not many people know about this organisation. They also assist internationally and I know the funds will change the lives of many,” he said.

“I have seen children growing up with facial deformities which can be rectified, provided there is early intervention. The families don’t have to be saddled with this,” added Tularam.

About 10 months ago, the dentist underwent open heart surgery. While recovering, he made a promise to himself which he has every intent to fulfill.

“My goal was that once I recovered, I would devote my life to charity and ride the Cape Town Cycle Tour,” he said.

Together with his colleagues, family and friends, Tularam has already raised money for Operation Smile and would like for the community and corporates to each into their pockets and donate to this medical charity.

“By donating to this cause, you will be giving someone a better quality of life,” he said.

Tularam couples his love for fitness and outdoor adventures with charity work.

In 2005 he climbed kilamanjaro to raise funds for hospice.
