Now is the chance for north Durban residents to elect their ward committees

Residents wishing to partake, whether as nominees, proposors or seconders, will follow the registration and verification process.

RESIDENTS of wards 34, 35, 36 and 110 are encouraged to participate in electing a new ward committee in the upcoming election which takes place this month at various venues.

Elections for wards 34, 35 and 36 take place on March 13 while elections for ward 110 will take place on March 20.

Ward 35 councillor, Nicole Bollman, said ward committees were an important communication link between residents, ward councillors and the municipality.

“These committees are an independent representative structure that functions impartially, are an advisory body without any executive powers and are instrumental to achieving the objectives of local government,” she said.

“The process on the day is fairly simple. Once the minimum number of 100 people have been reached, the process begins,” said Bollman.

Should this quorum not be reached, the election will be carried over to the next day.

“Only those who are registered to vote in their respective wards will be permitted to attend the election. In order to vote, you must carry with you your green bar coded ID or temporary ID as you would in a national or local election,” said Bollman.

“They will need to be verified against the voters roll. The presiding officer will give an explanation as to how the rest of the process will work on the day. After votes are cast, they will be counted and declared before the closing,” said Bollman.

Ward committee portfolios comprise:

• Cleansing and solid waste
• Electricity, water and sanitation
• Entrepreneurship and small business
• Health, safety and security
• Human settlement
• Skills development and job creation
• Sports, recreation and culture
• Transport, roads and storm water
