Durban North SAPS concerned over car part thefts

It is believed the thieves are targeting vehicles for parts.

DURBAN North police have urged drivers to be vigilant after three separate cases of car part thefts were reported.

According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, the spokesperson for the station, in two of the cases, the victim’s headlights were removed.

“We are not saying this is a trend. However, we’ve now recorded three cases within the space of four days. In two of the cases the victim’s only realised their headlights were missing once they returned home.

“In the third case, thieves stole a vehicle’s computer box. We suspect, in this case, a remote jamming device was used. We are urging residents to be vigilant and to check their vehicles if they have parked them somewhere for a lengthy period of time. We also urge them to report these cases,” he said.

Deokaran added that, in the past, the station had recorded a spike in remote jamming incidents.

“We urge residents not to leave valuables in their car. Remote jamming cases are very much an opportunistic crime. Criminals or syndicates are always on the lookout for any opportunity. Items such as laptops, cameras and phones are what the suspects most often look for,” he said.
