Full steam ahead as teams tackle Ohlanga River clean-up operation

With more rain expected this weekend, Redman said he was worried that more plastic would surface along the river.

THE Litterboom Project, an NPO whose aim is to alleviate the increase in marine plastic pollution, has been busy at work at the Ohlanga River since Monday.

Due to heavy rains, the river has been flooded with plastic, polystyrene and other debris which prompted the Litterboom Project to raise R100 000 to organise a special clean up operation.

Operations manager, Josh Redman, said teams, consisting of 20 people collectively have been hard at work.

“We found a lot of plastic. We also found canisters, polystyrene and even a jet ski. Now that we’ve got all the recyclable items out of the way, we’re clearing the muddy sticks and debris,” said Redman.

He added that it has been a bit of a challenge as there is only one truck available to do all the work, but progress has been made.

“ARB Electrical, a sponsor of Litterboom, funded the truck. Balwin Properties sponsored the use of their TLB which has made the clean-up easier,” he said.

Redman said there’s been increased interest from corporates in the recent months and the project is hoping to get more businesses involved.

“Our aim is to go into the communities this year and tackle the issue at hand. We’d also like to band with other organisations and grow resources,” said the eco-warrior.

He said although immense progress has been made since the start of the clean-up, when it would be complete remained an uncertainty as more rain has been predicted for the weekend.

“It we could get another truck to speed up the process, that would be great. I’m assuming this operation will run  for at least another week,” he said.
