Durban North housebreaking suspect handed seven-year sentence

The accused was first denied bail but was later released due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A HOUSEBREAKING accused has finally been dealt with by the law after he was recently convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Nkosinathi Ngcobo, was found guilty on three counts of housebreaking and theft and one count of possession of housebreaking implements.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell, Ngcobo had been operating in the Durban North area since 2020. “He was first arrested by our special operations team in June last year after a three and a half hour stake-out.

The accused had broken into several houses in Virginia that same evening,” he said. The stolen items in Ngcobo’s possession were linked to the properties he had broken into, and were key exhibits in the case against him.

Ngcobo was initially refused bail for the first three counts, but was then released on bail due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He was then rearrested in December 2020 by members of the Durban North Crime Prevention unit for being in possession of housebreaking implements.

Due to the re-offence, Ngcobo was denied bail and was in custody ever since.

He received the following sentences:

Count 1 – three years direct imprisonment for housebreaking and theft.
Count 2 – three years direct imprisonment for housebreaking and theft.
Count 3 – 12 months direct imprisonment for housebreaking and theft.
