UPL works with SAPS to nab criminals responsible for Cornubia chemical spill

UPL has engaged a former public prosecutor to assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) in ongoing investigations into the warehouse fire in July.

UNITED Phosphorus Limited (UPL) will assist SAPS to bring the criminals behind the arson attack at its Cornubia warehouse to book.

The warehouse was set on fire during the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal in July. This led to an environmental disaster and the closure of several beaches.

Japhet Ncube, the spokesperson for UPL South Africa, said the company has provided CCTV footage to police of looters breaking into the warehouse.

“UPL has provided statements and evidence to the SAPS investigating officers in relation to the attack. UPL has also handed over CCTV footage showing looters breaking into the warehouse premises, stealing various items from the buildings and also what appears to be looters collecting material that may have been used by them to set the property alight. Many of the people in the footage were not wearing masks and are therefore easily identifiable,” Ncube said.

He added the company has spent more than R267m, to date, to deal with the chemical spill.

“We are pleased that this clean-up operation, which saw 130 people working around the clock over the past few months, has successfully contained the spill,” said Ncube.

He added that the company would continue to assist the SAPS so the criminals responsible for the warehouse attack face the full might of the law.
