‘Don’t share banking details’ warns Durban North SAPS

A case of fraud was opened at the Durban North police station.

CAPTAIN Raymond Deokaran, the spokesperson for the Durban North police station, has warned residents not to share their banking details over the phone.

This comes after a local resident lost thousands of Rands from his bank account.

“The victim received a phone call from a suspect who claimed he worked for a cellphone service provider. He informed the victim he won a voucher and he needed his banking details,” said Deokaran.

The suspect informed the resident that he would receive a SMS with details on how to claim the alleged voucher.

“Thinking nothing of it, he waited for the message that never arrived. A day later, he attempted to use his debit card at a local shop. However, the payment was declined due to insufficient funds. He then realised that thousands of Rands had been withdrawn from his account,” he said.

Deokaran urged residents not to share personal banking details with anyone over the phone.
