Durban’s service delivery outshines Cape Town, report says

eThekwini Mayor, councillor Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed the findings and credited the city's turnaround strategy for yielding positive results.

THE eThekwini Municipality has welcomed findings by News24’s Out of Order Index that suggests the City has surpassed Cape Town in service delivery performance by underspending against its 2018/19 budget.

The study is conducted across South African municipalities. Results were announced yesterday, October 18.

eThekwini Mayor, councillor Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed the findings and credited the city’s turnaround strategy for yielding positive results.

“Following these findings, the city will continue to accelerate service delivery by multiplying our efforts to usher in a better life for scores of people. We are appealing to our residents to bear with us and join us in making eThekwini a livable city for all,” said Kaunda.

In a statement, the City said it will invest R1b of its procurement spending in the rural economy by the end of the 2021/22 financial year.

According to the statement, the City has built 15 799 houses over the last five years and rolled out water infrastructure in rural communities within eThekwini.

“Households with access to water have increased from 898 457 in 2016 to 960 710 in 2021,” read the statement.

The City has also rolled out electricity infrastructure to informal settlements and rehabilitated 1 237 km of access roads within the same period.

“During the 2019/20 financial year, the city’s irregular expenditure decreased by more than 54%. This follows the implementation of a Clean Administration and Clean Audit Strategy that reinforces clean governance as well as effective and efficient service delivery to communities,” concluded the statement.
