Durban North surfer makes waves in Muizenberg

Christ Gilmour added it was great to get back to competitive longboarding after a year without any competitions.

DURBAN North longboarder, Christy Gilmour was crowned the winner of the LaMuse Classic in Muizenberg recently.

The women’s only event was run and judged by women and Gilmour walked away with the top prize in the open division.

“I was really chuffed with the win in Cape Town. The SA longboard champs, that were held just before this competition, didn’t end on the best note for me personally. It was awesome to come back from that and come away with the victory. The whole vibe of the competition was amazing and, knowing this was an event run by only women, made it even more special.

“It has inspired me to try and get a contest up and running in Durban because, let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to surf on our coastline during summer?” Gilmour said.

The 20-year-old added it was great to get back to competitive longboarding after a year without any competitions.

“Nothing happened last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That’s all changed this year and I was lucky to be the only South African longboard surfer to compete at the MexiLog fest. It is awesome to be on the circuit again and competing and seeing my longboard friends, because I’ve missed that,” she said.
