Man drowns near uMngeni River mouth

This is the second drowning at this stretch of the river mouth this year.

A MAN, believed to be 35 years old, died after he tried to cross the uMngeni River mouth, near Blue Lagoon, on Wednesday afternoon.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen said various rescue personnel, including Metro Police Search and Rescue, responded to the incident at about 4pm.

“Lifeguards were attending to the drowning victim when paramedics arrived on scene. After extensive assessment, there was nothing further paramedics could do to assist him and he was declared dead on arrival,” said van Reenen.

“It is believed he was attempting to cross the lagoon when he got into difficulties and drowned, however, the necessary investigations will be conducted,” van Reenen said.

This is the second drowning at the river mouth this year. In February this year a man was swept away by strong currents.

His body was recovered after a search by participants from the #CleanBlueLagoon clean-up.
