E-hailing driver hijacked in Ottawa after picking up passengers in uMhlanga

The 48-year-old driver was locked in the boot of the vehicle during the incident.

AN e-hailing driver was hijacked in Ottawa by two suspects who pretended to be passengers.  

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson, Prem Balram said the suspects were picked up in uMhlanga and directed the driver to their alleged drop-off zone. 

“The 48-year-old driver said as they approached the requested destination, one of the passengers produced a firearm and instructed him to move over to the backseat. They then drove him to a sugar cane plantation in Canelands where they locked him in the boot. The victim could hear the suspects stripping parts of the vehicle while they searched for the tracking device.

“They then drove to a service station where they filled R100 fuel. The victim was then dropped off on the main road. He managed to flag down a passing mini bus taxi and informed the driver of the hijacking. The taxi driver assisted the man and dropped him off at RUSA headquarters,” Balram said. 

The vehicle was later recovered abandoned on an unpaved road in Ndwedwe.

In that incident, the driver was approached by three armed suspects who attempted to hijack him of his white VW Polo, however the driver damaged his vehicle trying to get away from the suspects.
