New contractor appointed for recycling collection in north Durban areas

A NEW contractor has been appointed in the Durban North areas to collect orange bags designated for recycling items. In the recent weeks, residents were up in arms over orange bags not being collected, but collection is now underway once again.

Speaking to Northglen News, Ward 35 councillor, Nicole Bollman, said the new contractor, Ntokozo Mthembu Powerush, commenced last week.

“Initially he was collecting in Izinga, iSibiya and other parts uMhlanga but now he will be responsible for all the northern suburbs,” said Bollman.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, said the City had some “challenges” with the project.

“The City has had some challenges with its orange bag entrepreneurial empowerment programme due to Covid-19. Contractors engaged in the distribution and collection of orange bags are currently dealing with the backlog and are being assisted by the City,” he told Northglen News.

“The recycling contractors together with the City are working around the clock to resolve both issues of distribution and collection. Residents are requested to utilise their nearest recycling facilities such as drop off and buy back centres to drop off their orange bags and other recyclables. The City apologises for the inconvenience caused,” he said.
