‘Snakes of Durban Facebook’ group grows from strength to strength

The page is a way to help people wanting to identify and learn more about Durban's snakes as well fostering an understanding about snakes and the important role they play in the eco-system.

WHEN Sunningdale resident, Jason Arnold, started the Facebook page, Snakes of Durban, he had no idea the interest it would generate and how the group would grow.

The page is a way to help people wanting to identify and learn more about Durban’s snakes as well fostering an understanding about snakes and the important role they play in the eco-system.

When the Facebook group was started it boasted around 200 members, however in recent years that number has grown by the thousands and now boasts more than 22 000 members.

“I’ve got my own snake rescue page, Universal Reptiles and I started Snakes of Durban as a platform for people who needed help identifying a snake and also a way for people to share their experience with these fascinating reptiles.

“I’ve had to call in help from like-minded friends who help those with questions in the group as I just couldn’t keep up with the requests for help. We now have more than 13 admins on the group who are fantastic beacons of knowledge on snakes in Durban,” he said.

Arnold said ordinary citizens had also gotten better at identifying common snakes found in and around the City thanks to the Facebook page.

“The group is open to anyone to join and it really is a useful page for anyone needing assistance and for those sharing our love and passion for snakes. We would love to see the group continue growing from strength to strength so we encourage residents to join if they would like,” he said.
