Durban North resident sets her sight on Dolphin Coast Challenge

AFTER wrapping up a dominant world championship title at the recent ICF Ocean Racing Championships in Lanzerote recently, local resident, Michelle Burn has set her sights on the upcoming Petrefuel Dolphin Coast Challenge from 14-15 August.

Burn proved her prowess when she cruised to victory at the global showpiece and after taking some time off following her win she is looking forward to getting back into familiar water for the KZN Single Ski Championships next month.

“I’ve had two weeks off since the World Championships which is long enough so I’ll get back to some hard training as I look towards the Dolphin Coast Challenge,” Burn said.

“I’m really glad that we have an event coming up next month because it gives me something to work towards as I start planning the second half of the year. The training load going into the world championships was really good so I want to keep that up before I ease off a bit before the race in three weeks.”

The Durban North resident has been in sublime form in her surfski in 2021, winning the national title and then doubling that up with the world title. Her performances this year have come down to a more focused training regime.

“I trained really hard up to the point that I had my two kids and with children you can’t keep up that same intensity of training. I couldn’t put in those consistent sessions but now that my children are at school it’s given me more time to consistently train at that high level and prepare correctly for events as well as get into the gym,” she added.

The conditions expected along the KwaZulu-Natal north coast aren’t foreign to Burn and she is looking forward to whatever conditions the weather gods throw at her.
