WATCH: Liquor store in Mount Edgecombe looted

Ward councillor for the area, Rory Macpherson, said it was now clear that the looting has nothing with freeing former President Jacob Zuma, and that the looting is now just criminal activity.

THREE men were arrested for looting a Tops SPAR liquor store in Mount Edgecombe at around midday today, July 12.

However, according to Rory Macpherson, the PR ward councillor, the private security company who made the arrests had to let the alleged perpetrators go as SAPS did not respond to make a criminal arrest.

Macpherson, said it was now clear that the looting has nothing with freeing former President Jacob Zuma, and that the looting is now just criminal activity.

“Nobody was hurt during the looting,” said Macpherson.

“We should be building as a nation, under the dream of Nelson Mandela,” he added.

Earlier this morning, the store put up a message on its Facebook group about the closure of its supermarket which is adjoined to the liquor store.

Northglen News reached out to Phoenix SAPS for comment but was told the station is no longer allowed to comment.

The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA), on behalf of SPAR, condemned the looting of retail shops and destruction of property in a press statement.

“The loss to retailers, including the cost of damage to property and delivery vehicles, runs into millions of Rand and has already severely affected their operations. The potential impact on business viability and job security is also a serious cause for concern,” added the CGCSA.

The extent of damages caused to the property could not be confirmed at the time of publication.
