La Lucia Clinic upgrade a boost for the area says local resident

The clinic has now been upgraded to include a new building, ample seating and offering a variety of services.

THE La Lucia Clinic has undergone a dramatic transformation in the last year servicing the needs of the communities in and around the area.

Since its inception, the clinic has been a welcome addition to the area, providing comprehensive care to the community, however, it has faced several challenges, one of which has been the space to carry out its daily duties.

In 2019, plans were announced to expand the clinic and build a new prefab building to help provide a full package of health services to the community.

The clinic has now been upgraded to include a new building, ample seating and offering a variety of services. The area around the clinic has also been properly fenced off with a full time guard on duty.

The approach to the new structure was to improve space and accommodate a full package of health services, improve compliance with infection, prevention and control and to accommodate the three streams of care (mother child and women health, minor ailments and chronic services).

La Lucia resident, Hans Knop, has welcomed the upgrade saying it was a pleasure visiting the clinic when he needed to access health care services.

“I think the upgrade is wonderful as it was long overdue. Prior to this the clinic made use of a few cramped small rooms inside the La Lucia Library and a temporary prefab structure. While the rooms and the prefab are still being used, there is now ample room to offer more services to the north Durban community and the surrounds.

“I think it is especially great as Covid-19 requires social distancing. Patients now can await their turns sitting in chairs in a covered area and the inside of the clinic really looks like an up to date modern clinic with all staff having their own rooms and offices. I feel some residents are unaware of the upgrade and I wanted to let them know what a fantastic addition and boon it is to the area,” Knop said.
