Duffs Road learners taught to plant veggies

The fresh produce will be used in the school's School Nutritional Programme which provides the learners with a daily meal and teaches them how to lead healthy lifestyles.

SOROPTIMIST International (SI) Durban in partnership with Butterfly Promotions Community Project (BPCP) recently started a food garden at Duffs Road Primary to educate learners on food sustainability.

Children, who live within walking distance of the school, assisted in creating the garden and will manage the green patch under the supervision of Soroptimist member and teacher at the school, Avitha Ramdarie.

With the help of teachers and members of both organisations, the learners planted kale, chilli, peppers and basil.

Butterfly Promotions also donated two avocado trees which will be planted as well.

The fresh produce will be used in the school’s School Nutritional Programme which provides the learners with a daily meal and teaches them how to lead healthy lifestyles.

“SI Durban are very proud to initiate the School Garden Project and help create awareness and education around the need for sustainable gardens and food security. Educating our youth on how to grow their own food sources is key to their physical and mental health. We are looking forward to growing this project further as well,” said Jennene Naidu, president of the SI Durban Club.

The organisation is a vibrant and dynamic one, for today’s women seeking to make a tangible change in her community and country. Their projects are diverse with the aim of creating programmes which help people, the planet, promotes peace and create prosperity and partnerships.

Cher van Egmond, chairperson of BPCP said the organisation was delighted to share the knowledge of the Garden of Life Farmer Kidz programme created by Steven Barnard who lives in Pretoria.

The entity focuses on growing food in partnership with Farmer Kidz and the Garden of Life Programme.

They also teach how to build a log cabin and create a food forest and teach how to harvest and create nutritious meals.

“Growing food in a sustainable way, using items that would otherwise litter the environment, is cost effective and affordable to all, ensuring food security to the most vulnerable, our children,” said van Egmond.

Gopichand Maharaj, principal of Duffs Road Primary School was equally excited about the project.

“Duffs Road Primary School has enjoyed a long history with Soroptimist International Durban where they have assisted our learners in many different ways. The food garden is a very creative way of getting children to care about food security and the environment, which is a strong goal of our school’s curriculum,” said Maharaj.

The project will be rolled out at Greenbury Secondary School, Avoca Secondary School, Durban Girls High School and Grove End Secondary School within the next two months.
