Durban mother and baby need your help

"Haven of Hope has given the mom and baby a place to stay. We are looking for sponsors to assist with the shelter fees of R1 000 a month," - Jodi Torlager.

A 28-DAY-OLD baby, who has been living on the streets since birth, and his mother have finally been given a chance at having a warm bed and a roof over their heads.

The mother, who lived at Bulwer Park for three years, will now call Haven of Hope her new home where she and her infant son will reside.

Outreach programme, Connected, is dedicated to assisting individuals who are less fortunate and helps them better their lives.

Founder of the organisation, Jodi Torlager, said she met the mother while visiting the park during one of their outreach programmes and formed a relationship with her.

“She fell pregnant while living on the streets and was adamant that she wanted to keep her baby. When the baby was born, he also had to live on the streets with his mother, so we began to look for a shelter for the both of them,” she said

“Haven of Hope has given the mom and baby a place to stay. We are looking for sponsors to assist with the shelter fees of R1 000 a month,” she added.

While the mother is unemployed, she is currently involved in a skills development programme in Durban North where she is learning to crochet.

The items she makes are sold to generate an income for her and her son.

“She joined this programme on her own will as she wants to better her life and provide for her child. Although she is shy, she has an amazing spirit,” said Torlage.

Torlager added that there were numerous people and organisations that wanted to assist the baby and mother and have been looking for her at the park.

“We would like everyone to know that both are safe,” she said.
