Hockly and Nisbet triumph at SA Marathon Champs

The competition doubled as the national trials for the world championships in Pitetsi in Romania in October.

MOUNT Moreland resident, Saskia Hockly and Mount Edgecombe resident, Jenna Nisbet, were triumphant at this weekend’s South African Canoe Marathon Championships at Zandvlei in Muizenberg.

Nisbet, who recently got married and Danville Park Girls’ High School learner, Hockly, retained their national crown, with silver going to Bridgitte Hartley and Christie Mackenzie, ensuring a carbon copy of the top two positions from the nationals in St Francis last year.
Nisbet, who finished second to Hartley in the duel to the line for the singles honours on Saturday, was able to enjoy the spoils from her thriving partnership with U18 Hockly.

“We had the lead but Saskia was saying ‘They’re coming’ so we just had to go faster till she stopped saying that. We are so pleased with the win and it was an awesome feeling defending our titles,” she said.

The weekend of races was one of the country’s most anticipated canoeing events as paddlers raced at the venue that hosted the ICF Marathon World Championships in 1998.

In the men’s K2 race, Hamish Lovemore completed a breath-taking clean-sweep of gold medals when he and partner Hank McGregor successfully defended their national title on Sunday.

The competition doubled as the national trials for the world championships in Pitetsi in Romania in October.
