GOBY collects 600kgs of plastic waste on uMhlanga Promenade

The GOBY fish structure will be leaving the uMhlanga Promenade on Sunday, 16 May.

IN little more than four months of creating plastic waste awareness and freeing the environment of more than 600kgs of plastic waste, GOBY, will be leaving the uMhlanga Promenade on Sunday, 16 May.

The Global Organisation 4 Brighter Youth (GOBY) environmental project is symbolised by a five metre fish structure (mimicking an actual Goby fish).

It was first launched in 2019 to address the issue of plastic waste on the KZN coastline, while educating children and families on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling waste and removing plastic waste from our beaches.

Founder and director of the initiative, Vaughn Bishop said he was grateful for the support shown by residents and visitors to the promenade.

“We’ve been amazed by how many people have helped make this venture a success. To collect more than 600 kilograms of plastic in a short space of time was mind-blowing. I’d like to thank the uMhlanga UIP and all the residents and visitors who’ve fed GOBY as their response has been amazing. Our message throughout the awareness project was about respecting the environment,” Bishop said.

Bishop added GOBY would next commence on a roadshow to 50 primary schools in the uMlazi, uMbumbulu and Isipingo districts, teaching children about environmental responsibility.
