Durban mayor warns of scam using his name

According to mayoral spokesperson, Mluleki Mntungwa, the scammer is pretending to be helping a schoolboy who is a 'Top Achiever' to go on a school trip overseas.

ETHEKWINI Municipality Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda has warned the public of a fraudster soliciting money from unsuspecting members of the public by using his name.

According to mayoral spokesperson, Mluleki Mntungwa, the scammer is pretending to be helping a schoolboy who is a ‘Top Achiever’ to go on a school trip overseas.

“Mayor Kaunda has not sanctioned any fundraising campaign with an aim of soliciting funds for a learner who is only known as Kheswa.”

“This is a scam and members of the public should treat it as such. He has condemned this fraudulent activity and he is encouraging members of the public who come across such scam to report it to the law enforcement agencies,” Mntungwa said.

This is one of a number of scams targeting unsuspecting people in the last few weeks.  

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has warned of a scam doing the rounds targeting vulnerable people seeking employment within the directorate.

The recruitment office of the Hawks has received numerous calls from people saying they were following up after speaking to a ‘Colonel Monyela’ who requested them to forward their CV and qualifications.
