Kitten rescued from car engine in uMhlanga

PACT founder, Neerie Naidoo said the kitten had most likely crawled into the engine to warm up and take shelter from the cold.

A KITTEN was rescued from a car engine at an uMhlanga Shopping mall yesterday.

Volunteer for Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment (PACT), Prathna Singh responded to the mall to rescue the kitten.

PACT founder, Neerie Naidoo said the kitten had most likely crawled into the engine to warm up and take shelter from the cold.

“As we reach the colder months kittens tend to climb into engines to find warmth. If people are parked in shopping centres, we encourage them to tap their engines before driving to make sure there are no animals resting or sleeping in the engine,” said Naidoo.

She urged malls and factory owners to sterilise their resident cats.

“While cats play a significant role in helping to keep rodents and other pests at bay in shopping centre and factories, cat numbers need to be controlled. Malls also have a responsibility to ensure cat numbers are controlled by sterilising the cats. We have people call us saying they have 20 cats at their mall which we need to remove, even if we do that, there will soon be another 20 cats – the only way to control it is to sterilise the cats,” she said.

Naidoo said the community can contact PACT to find out about the various sterilisation programmes they run. For more information, call Candice on  071 172 1400. PACT is also looking for a foster home for the rescued kitten. To find out more, call 073 005 4275.
