Greenwood Park musician shares ‘upbeat’ news about international nomination

With this accolade, Moody said he was invited to perform on the US stage - an offer he had to decline due to the pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic.

GREENWOOD Park resident Arnez Moody, or Skillzdarapper as he is known on stage, and his fiancé, Alvina Moodley (ALVI), won international acclaim recently.

The couple said their song, 88 Times, was nominated as Song of the Year at Coast 2 Coast Live, an international musical showcase. With this accolade as well as other nominations Moody said he was invited to perform on the U.S stage – an offer he had to decline due to the pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite this, Moody (32) is inspired to continue perusing his dream and motivating others. “There are a lot of musicians in Greenwood Park that are up and coming artists, trying to breakthrough. Keep pushing and don’t give up. I’ve been pushing for 10 years and I’m still pushing,” said the trap artist.

Moodley (28) echoed this ‘upbeat’ stance when she said: “People should reach for their dreams. Nothing is impossible.”

She decided to team up with Moody when she was unable to work during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“People are stronger when they work together as a team. I do rap and hip hop. I couldn’t actually get to work because of lockdown, so I decided to join Arnex in his music and we have made a success of it. It has been an inspiring journey for us as couple,” said Moodley, who is an attorney by profession.

Moody said he has been recording his music since he was 15 years old. “You can listen to my music on my online radio station, by searching for Skillzdarapper online,” he said. While his music has been described as Trap, Soul trap and RnB, Moody said the sky is the limit for him.

“I see myself as a musician who can tackle any genre. I see my music as unique – something fresh. It has a new vibe to it. The beats and production we do can only be described as ‘crispy,'” he said.

Moody said he started rapping with friends who would gather on Havelock Road for rap battles.

From there he and his friends would perform at open mic nights at the Durban Bat Centre before travelling to events from Johannesburg to Swaziland, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
