Malacca Road surface deteriorates due to water flow

Local resident, Arianne Hayes-Hill, who uses the road on a regular basis said the problem has worsened in the last few months.

RESIDENTS of Glenhills have expressed their dismay over the continued degradation of Malacca Road tar surface.

While illegal dumping continues to plague the area, the road surface has now come into focus outside the Malacca Road garden refuse dump.

Riddled with ever-widening potholes, the worst section of the road outside the dump is littered with more than eight holes.

Local resident, Arianne Hayes-Hill, who works with the Malacca Road Informal Settlement, said she uses the road on a regular basis and the problem has worsened in the last few months.

“There is a continuous flow of water coming from the green belt, which leads to the Redhill Cemetery, and the water flows through the dump site and onto Malacca Road. The constant flow of water is eroding the surface of the tarmac leaving more than eight potholes.

“Most of the road is drivable but this section can cause serious damage to vehicles if drivers aren’t aware of the size of the potholes. The water flowing from the green space behind the dump is clean water. There are two areas the water is flowing from, one comes through the dump site, while the other is a few metres up the road,” she explained.

Hayes-Hill said she hoped to warn motorists using the road to drive carefully, particularly over the section outside the dump.
