More than 1000 tons of refuse removed from Blackburn Village

"It took the Durban Solid Waste Unit three hours to remove the illegal dumps," said the City.

FOLLOWING the clean up operation on Friday, last week, the eThekwini municipality has reported that more than 1000 tons of refuse was removed from Blackburn Village. 

Spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality, Msawakhe Mayisela said: “1040 tons of waste were removed.  It took the Durban Solid Waste Unit three hours to remove the illegal dumps excluding the transportation to the landfill sites,” he said. 

Mayisela said the refuse removal trucks were sent by  Durban Solid Waste to clean up the area.

“It is the mandate of the City to provide a refuse removal service in all areas, informal settlements included,” he said. 

Illegal dumping is an ongoing issue in the area, he added. 

“The issue of illegal dumping in the area has been ongoing due to the influx of people moving into informal settlements. We try our level best to ensure that all refuse is collected, and clean ups are conducted,” said Mayisela.

 Anyone caught illegally dumping faces a hefty fine of up to R5000. 

“There are by-laws that provides for penalties for people caught red handed, however in an informal settlement the socio-economic factors are complex, and perpetrators usually dump at night when there is less visibility,” said Mayisela.
