Police warns against carrying large sums of money following uMhlanga robbery

KZN police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, urged residents to be cautious when visiting banks or withdrawing money.

POLICE have warned residents to avoid carrying large sums of money following a shooting and attempted robbery outside a bank at The Crescent Shopping Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

A 34-year-old man was shot in the upper arm as he left the bank with a friend. It is alleged the man was making a deposit with his friend when he was accosted by a suspect, wearing a balaclava and carrying a handgun.

The suspect shot and wounded the victim, who was transported to an uMhlanga hospital. The suspect then fled the scene along with three accomplices in a white Audi.

KZN police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, urged residents to be cautious when visiting banks or withdrawing money.

“We urge residents to consider safer options like depositing money into bank accounts. People are being robbed of their cash or even killed, a warning has been issued to prevent such incidents in future,” she said.

Police also offered tips to avoid falling victim to cash robberies:

  • Alternate the days and times on which you deposit cash
  • Refrain from making cash deposits
  • Never make your bank visits public, even to people close to you
  • Do not openly display the money you are depositing while you are standing in the bank queue
  • Avoid carrying money bags, briefcases or openly displaying your deposit receipt book
  • It’s advisable to identify another branch nearby that you can visit to ensure that your banking pattern is not easily recognisable or detected
