Glen Anil learner is on a ‘drum roll’ with second KZN award

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year's event took place online and the young drummer submitted two video performances.

GLEN ANIL resident, Obed Ephraim ‘beat’ the competition across the province when he won the KZN Drumkit Player of the year for the second year in a row. Although this was the second time he entered the competition, the experience was a new one.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s event took place online and Ephraim submitted two video performances.

“I performed a cover of Snarky Puppy’s song, What about Me and a solo, where I made up my own routine,” he said.

The young drummer said he chose to cover this song because it presented a challenge and allowed him to showcase his skills. “The time signature for the song was easy, but the way the band played it was difficult. I had to know the song really well because I had to stop and start on time,” he explained.

“Technically it was very challenging. He didn’t want to perform an easy piece,” added mother, Seema Ephraim.

Father, Roderick Ephraim said the video was submitted online.

“There are two pieces. In the two minute solo, you have to be creative and use the drum sound. In the second video, he drummed over the Snarky Puppy song to offer his interpretation of the song. You have to set up a YouTube channel, post your videos to the channel and then post the link on to the Drumkit Player group,” he explained.

The event was hosted by South African Music Teachers Association (SASMT), he added.
