KZN beach walk raises R100 000 for environmental organisations
Local resident, Nikki Williamson was pleased with the support from the greater Durban community for the Philocaly Trail along the KZN north coast.
A TOTAL of R100 000 was raised on a five-day charity beach hike, The Philocaly Trail, from Mtunzini to Sheffield Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast recently.
The event, which was founded in 2019 by local resident, Nikki Williamson, was in an effort to raise awareness of the province’s pristine coastline while also addressing the threat the oceans are facing with plastic pollution.
Despite the event being postponed by two months due to Covid-19 lockdown regulations, entries leaped from 285 in 2019 to 430 in 2020 and the funds were raised for Breathe Conservation and Wild Oceans.

The event saw the participants traverse the 84 kilometre sandy beach trail on foot.
“I was incredibly pleased at how everything turned out,” said Williamson.
“The fact that we managed to raise so much was just wonderful and I think the trail set out what I wanted it to achieve. Everyone who contributed and walked with us were absolute champions and they all made it work,” she said.
Buoyed by the success of the trail walk, she has already set her sights on the next event.
