uMhlanga rotary club blown away by generous support for Bobbi Bear

The club had last week put out an appeal via several social media platforms appealing for help for Bobbi Bear after the organisation's premises was ransacked.

THE Rotary Club of Umhlanga said it was blown away by the outpouring of support from the north Durban community for Bobbi Bear, an NPO helping sexually abused children.

The club had last week put out an appeal via several social media platforms appealing for help for Bobbi Bear after the organisation’s premises was ransacked.

This was the second time the NPO had been targeted this year. In a post on the Bobbi Bear’s Facebook page, it said thieves cleared out the premises, even stealing an air conditioner.

Director of club services for the Rotary Club of Umhlanga, Vanessa Champion said the appeal for help was answered within hours of posting a message on a WhatsApp group.

“We are just absolutely amazed by the response from the north Durban community. I initially put out an appeal on the Umhlanga Women Achievers (UWA) WhatsApp group and within an hour plans were being drawn up. A huge thank you also goes out to Helene Griffiths from Granny Griff’s Sugar Shack who offered her home as the drop off point for the area.

“I expected a few bags but when I arrived on Friday last week to collect items for Bobbi Bear I was absolutely blown away that there was a whole room full of items. We also had Anchor of Hope and learners and educators from Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School donate items which was amazing. If that wasn’t enough we also had a number of residents pay directly into the Bobbi Bear account. One generous donor, who did not want to be named, donated R10 000, to the cause,” Champion explained.
