Trespassing suspect killed after attacking security officer in Durban North

The incident occurred just after 3am on Saturday morning.

A SUSPECT accused of trespassing was killed in the early hours of the morning in Durban North after he attempted to attack a security officer with a metal pipe.

The suspect had allegedly earlier attacked another response officer from Marshall Security, breaking the officer’s forearm using the same pipe. According to Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell, the incident occurred just after 3am on Saturday morning.

“We received a call from a client that a suspect was on his property on Blackburn Road. However, when our officers arrived, the suspect had fled on foot. A description was sent out to patrol units and the suspect was spotted a short while later on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, in the vicinity of the fire station.

“A foot chase ensued and as our officer attempted to apprehend the man he pulled out a long metal pipe and attempted to strike the officer over the head. He put up his hand to protect himself and sustained a broken forearm. The suspect was able to evade arrest and was later spotted on Belgrave Crescent by a different patrol officer,” Powell explained.

According to Powell as the suspect was cornered by the second officer he attacked using the metal pipe.

“A scuffle broke out as the suspect attempted to attack the officer, he was shot in the upper body. He was later pronounced deceased by responding paramedics,” he concluded.

Durban North police are investigating the incident.
