VIDEO: Artist brings Riverside Road substation to life with bird murals

The substation, which is situated next to the uMgeni Bird Park now has a Goliath heron, a pair of Mangrove kingfishers and an African fish eagle brought to life by Duminy.

AN electricity substation on Riverside Road has been transformed into a beautiful and stunning work of art by local street artist, Giffy Duminy.

Three iconic species of birds found along the uMngeni River now adorn the once drab substation in a project green lit by the Umgeni Estuary Conservancy and local NPO, Enviro Fixers Durban North.

It is the fourth mural project involving Duminy and the Enviro Fixers, who are a group of passionate residents who safeguard the north Durban neighbourhood and environment. The substation, which is situated next to the uMgeni Bird Park now has a Goliath heron, a pair of Mangrove kingfishers and an African fish eagle brought to life by Duminy.

Helen Koch of Enviro Fixers said the project would not have been possible without various stakeholders and sponsors.

“We are grateful to Margaret Burger and the Umgeni Estuary Conservancy and to our sponsors for helping us uplift this substation. The response from the north Durban community and Durbanites in general to three incredible works of art have been fantastic. We feel it will certainly be an added highlight to the area which is home to the bird park and Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve. The African fish eagle which really sets the tone for the project was important because of the trail which runs along the length of Riverside Road called the Fish Eagle Trail.

“The Fish Eagle Trail was originally known as the Umgeni River Park Trail. The more enticing name was selected when the Green Corridor concept was at an inception stage. At the heart of the name change was using the uMngeni estuary and riverine corridor as a green tourism destination combining the recreational, social and the ecological assets of the coast to catchment model,” Koch explained.
