Ongoing water leaks plague Greenwood Park

A water pipe on Buxton Road has been continually bursting since February, said acting ward councillor for the area, Shontel de Boer.

ONGOING pipe bursts have left Greenwood Park residents without water.

A pipe burst on Canberra Avenue on Friday, 21 August. Around the corner, a pipe on the corner of Chris Hani Road and Buxton Road has been continually bursting since February, said acting ward councillor for the area, Shontel de Boer.

Canberra Avenue resident, Duncan Nagoor said he reported the leak at 7am on Friday.

“They need to upgrade this whole area. I am installing Jojo tanks, because I’ve had enough of this problem. We can’t continue relying on the municipality for water. We had a lot of water problems prior to lockdown. It impacts our day in everyway. My children have to go to school, they have to shower. We have modern toilet facilities where you can’t fill in water,” he said.

Reporting water outages is time consuming, added Peter Blake, another resident.

“We can never get through to the municipality in terms of water. When they do answer, they just put you through to someone else and that’s as far as it goes. The website is outdated as well,” he said.

“I’m a single parent with three boys. We have to wait two days to do washing and we’ve got school uniforms to wash. And it’s an extra expense to go out and buy food when there’s no water to cook,” he added.

While the pipe on Buxton Road was repaired on Friday, De Boer is concerned that it will burst again in a matter of weeks.

“We are not sure if this is final because it’s been ongoing. It keeps bursting again and again since the beginning of the year. We don’t know if it will burst again in a week or two. It causes much ongoing frustration for the residents who continually have their water switched off because of the same burst,” she said.

“It’s the same on Adelaide Tambo Road. There are at least four bursts that have been repaired, except for one that is still running,” she added.

The eThekwini Municipality did not send a comment at the time this article went to press.
