Councillor appeals for help following Blackburn Village shack fire

It is unclear what started the fire however, local ward councillor, Nicole Bollman has started a collection to help families affected by the blaze.

MORE than 80 families have been left homeless after a fire tore through the Blackburn Village Informal Settlement late on Saturday evening.

It is unclear what started the fire however, local ward councillor, Nicole Bollman has started a collection to help families affected by the blaze.

“On Sunday I spoke with members of the community who were already hard at work cleaning the debris and preparing the area for the weeks ahead. The blaze displaced approximately 85 people, all of whom have lost everything. I’ve begun a collection for those affected and so far a few members of North Durban have donated some items,” she said.

Bollman said some businesses in the area have drop off points for the victims of the shack fire. They are:

• Broadway Pharmacy, Swapo Rd.
• Celebrate Party & Function Store, Mackeurtan Ave (non-perishables only).
• Eastmans Super Spar, Glenashley.
• du Preez financial services, Somerset Park

“Since I put out an appeal for help on various social media platforms, the local community have really stepped up and donated items which has been amazing to see. What is needed at the moment is clothing (men, women, children), bedding, cutlery, crockery and non-perishable food items,” she said.
