Sea Cow Lake Road businesses hope to form conservancy

Businesses based on the road have now come forward with the intention of forming a conservancy to uplift the area around the rehabilitated section of road.

WHILE the long-awaited repair of Sea Cow Lake Road was welcomed by residents and businesses in the area, some feel more improvements could be made to uplift the area. Businesses based on the road have now come forward with the intention of forming a conservancy to uplift the area around the rehabilitated section of road and possibly look at adopting-a-spot.

Northglen News recently met with several business owners who laid out their plan going forward.

The road which had been a problem for almost three years was left riddled with large potholes damaging vehicles passing through. Prior to its repair, the road surface had also posed a hazard for pedestrians who had to avoid being splashed by waste water pooled in potholes.

Warren Wareing, whose business is based at Enforce Office Park said the initial plan was to form an informal conservancy.

“I think I speak for all the businesses in the area when we say we are delighted that the road is finally fixed. Our intention is to form an informal conservancy until we get the blessing from the eThekwini Municipality to adopt-a-spot. There are a few areas on the road we feel could still be improved. One of the things we are hoping for is another layer of tar to shore up the road’s surface and to fix the paving and manhole drains which are damaged. As businesses we had discussed the intention of beautifying the surrounding banks and possibly look at ways to curb the dumping from the nearby informal settlement,” Wareing explained.

Trish Barlow-Jones, another business owner, concurred with Wareing.

“As a regular user of the road I was so pleased to see the problems fixed. It certainly has made a big difference already. We would like the City to perhaps look at fixing a few things that could improve the road for motorists and pedestrians alike. We would then perhaps look at maintaining the banks and pavements,” she said.
