Suspect arrested, found with police radio following Avoca car theft

The suspect is facing several charges including attempted murder after allegedly opening fire on pursuing police officers.

NTUZUMA SAPS arrested a suspect on Monday afternoon for his role in the theft of a bakkie from a business premises in Avoca.

According to police the vehicle, which was fitted with a tracking device, was found in G Section on Celukuthula Road in Ntuzuma.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, when police arrived on scene they found three suspects sitting next to the vehicle.

“When the suspects saw the police officers, they ran into an awaiting vehicle and sped off while shooting at police. In their attempt to evade arrest, the driver of the vehicle lost control and crashed. Two men alighted and fled on foot. The driver was apprehended and the vehicle was searched. Car breaking implements, a police handset radio and computer boxes were recovered inside the vehicle,” she said.

Despite a foot search, two of the suspects are still at large, confirmed police.

“It was later discovered that the crashed getaway vehicle was also stolen in Greenwood Park. The suspect will be charged for possession of car breaking implements, possession of suspected stolen vehicles, theft of motor vehicles, attempted murder and contravening the Telecommunications Act,” Mbele said.

According to Mbele the suspect is due to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court this week.
