Greenwood Park nurses shine in pandemic

President Cyril Ramaphosa praised healthcare workers, including nurses, for their vital role during the pandemic.

AS the nation continues to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, International Nurses’ Day on 12 May was especially significant. Nurses and healthcare workers have been at the forefront of the battle in KwaZulu-Natal where more than 1400 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed.

The Northglen News visited a Greenwood Park general practice to find out what it’s like working in the healthcare profession during the pandemic.

“It’s been scary coming to work, but we have to have faith, and we take precautions. If we see a patient coughing, we put them in the side examination room and the doctor sees them straight away. We also need to encourage patients to come inside as some are afraid to leave their cars,” said Sajda Soofie, who works as a nurse and receptionist at Dr Mags Moodley’s general practice.

Yolanda Tissong, who works as a nurse and assistant at the practice, said she worries about infecting her family.

“I have a two-year-old and a 10-year-old at home and I am scared of making them sick. When I get home, I shower straight away,” she said.

In his address to the nation on 23 April, President Cyril Ramaphosa praised healthcare workers, including nurses, for their vital role during the pandemic.

“We pay tribute to them, the nurses, the doctors, the scientists and the community screening field workers who are leading our public health response. We are committed to ensuring that they have all the resources they need ? including adequate personal protection equipment and other recognition ? to undertake the work that is being asked of them,” he said.

International Nurses’ Day is celebrated on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, to honour her as the founder of modern day nursing.
