Durban North brothers aim to shine for SA
The talented duo made history last year at the 18th FINA World Championships held in South Korea becoming the first-ever South African brothers to compete at the same world champs in the same race (5km).
DURBAN North brothers, Michael and Chris McGlynn, have made a phenomenal start to the year securing outstanding results at this year’s aQuellé Midmar Mile and the recent South Africa National Open Water Championships in Marina Martinique, Jeffreys Bay.
Michael (20), who won this year’s Midmar Mile won the 10km open water champs which now means he qualifies for the Olympic trials which take place in Seychelles in May this year.
His older brother, Chris (24), who finished sixth at the Midmar Mile also secured a fourth place finish at the 10km open water champs.
Impressively he also won gold in the 5km open water race.
“I was ecstatic with the results and more so to have my brother alongside me also performing amazingly. To qualify for the Olympic trials is a huge achievement for me and I’m ready for the challenge ahead. Reaching the Olympic Games is the pinnacle for any athlete in the world and that’s something I’m actively working towards. Although I prefer open water swimming I’m hoping to compete in one of the pool events at the games at the swimming nationals later this year,” Michael explained.

For the brothers, competing in events outside of South Africa is hugely beneficial.
“With international exposure you definitely pick up so many different race strategies and you are then able to hone your skills. Without that experience you are already at a disadvantage so it’s critical. Having Michael alongside me is a big motivating factor. We train and live together so we always have each other’s backs when it comes to support. We are also both working into making the SA open water team for the 2021 world champs next year,” Chris said.

Speaking on his performances at the open water champs, Chris said he was ‘stoked’ with his results.
“I’m happy because I truly believe I’ve made my comeback. I was really stoked with my performances and I’m looking forward to what is to come.”
The brothers both train with Alisdair Hatfield and are part of the Action Swim Academy.
