Disinfectant brand refutes claims around Coronavirus

While tests confimed that the product is effective against other coronaviruses there have been no tests done in connection with the current outbreak.

PRODUCERS of the disinfectant, Dettol took to social media this weekend to dispel the speculation about its product and the novel 2019-nCoVcoronavirus.

The brand  released a statement to clarify any potential misunderstanding that may exist with regard to the efficacy of their products.

While tests confirmed that the product is effective against other coronaviruses (such as MERS-CoVand SARS-CoV) there have been no tests done in connection with the current outbreak.

“As this is an emerging outbreak, Dettol, like other brands, doesn’t yet have access to the new virus (2019-nCoV) for testing and, as a result, is not yet in a position to confirm levels of effectiveness against the new strain,” read the statement.

The brand said they continue to play a part in combating and containing the outbreak of the virus, having donated £5.5 million in cash and products to assist in the mobilisation of medical staff to treat those affected and provide soap and hand sanitizers to hospitals in Wuhan .

“Although 2019-nCoV is a new strain, this virus is very similar to other coronaviruses. We continue to work with our partners to ensure that we have the latest understanding of the virus, route of transmission and will test our product range once health authorities make the strain available,” they added.
