Crusaders paddler ready for Dusi milestone

Duncan Guy with the permanent number 861 will be paddling in a K2 with fellow club member, Stuart Dubber.

CHAIRMAN of the Crusaders Paddling Club, Duncan May is looking forward to completing his milestone 20th Dusi Canoe Marathon when the race gets underway on Thursday.

The Glen Anil resident with the permanent number 861 will be paddling in a K2 with fellow club member, Stuart Dubber.

The 45-year-old has done six Dusi’s with Dubber and believes their understanding has led to a successful partnership.

“We gel really well in the boat, I think that’s key in a K2 canoe. We have a good understanding on the river. I felt it was only right after paddling together in my first Dusi in 1996 that we had to team-up again to complete my milestone 20th in this year’s race. They call us the ‘fish and chips’ of the marathon because we aim to complete not compete,” he quipped.

May said the camaraderie and the spirit of the race was what kept paddlers coming back to the Dusi year after year.

“When I had paddled my ninth Dusi, my plan was to get to 10 and end there but then I’m now at 19 and about to complete 20 so who knows where it will end. The tradition and the spirit out on the river is absolutely incredible. I feel for those of us who aren’t competitive the tradition of the race keeps us coming back. The camaraderie on the river is also something special especially when you are facing a tough section on the river and need encouragement,” he explained.
