Scrapbook buffs shower baby home with gifts

About 70 scrapbook enthusiasts donated a variety of cleaning products, detergents and food products.

LA LUCIA resident, Janine Esterhuizen proudly presented The La Lucia Baby House with a generous donation from a local group of scrapbook enthusiasts recently. The club celebrated National Scrapbook Day (NSD) earlier this month with a get together at St Luke’s Congregational Church in Glenashley. This was their fourth annual event to commemorate NSD.

“Each year we choose a charity to support. Within South Africa there are 30 venues where people get together to scrapbook and fellowship,” said Esterhuizen.

She suggested the baby home as the charity of choice for this year’s event, having been touched by their work after her teenage daughter volunteered with them for her community service as part of a school project.

“We had about 70 ladies who donated a variety of cleaning products, detergents and food products. There’s quite a variety that will enable the baby house to get through the next couple of weeks or months. Everybody just jumped on board. I was really overwhelmed. It took us two trips to get all the donations home from the church. There were also monetary donations and vouchers and we also made a whole lot of floral decorations on the day which were sold and all of the proceeds were collected for the baby home. We managed to raise R1 600,” she said.

Sheila Collins from The La Lucia Baby House said: “We so appreciate people stepping forward, wanting to assist us with what we do. Every little bit helps and the things on our wish list are things that we need daily, that we have to go out and buy. When they are donated, then it really does help us. We take care of abandoned babies in our home and we take care of our carers, the staff that help us. So all of these donations keep our doors open,” she said.

While they are currently caring for three babies, the home can house up to six babies at a time.
