New plant feature is the ‘heart’ of the north Durban community

Enviro Fixers Durban North has now added a new heart shaped feature in Bridgevale Valley Park.

THE project to rehabilitate Bridgevale Valley park in Durban North by Enviro Fixers-Durban North is slowly taking shape, and in recent weeks, you could say that has taken the shape of a heart.

Enviro Fixers are run by a group of passionate residents uplifting and beautifying Durban North. The group also safeguards the environment by replacing alien invader plants with indigenous plants.

A collaborative effort between the City’s Parks Department and Enviro Fixers has seen the park transformed in recent months with a newly installed fence as well as the removal of several alien invasive species.

The group has now added a new heart shaped feature in the park rich in symbolism explained member Helen Koch.

“We wanted this feature to be ready for Valentine’s Day. February is also the month of love and by putting together this feature, we want residents running on the Kenneth Kaunda Road bridge (which is directly above the park) to look down and see the heart and recognise that the park is the heart of the community. We will also be planting succulents (kalanchoe sexangularis) around the heart that turn red in the sun making it stand out visually.

“We also want those using the one-kilometre track around the park to see that the heart of this project is beating strong. Since we’ve started the project we’ve had Ocean View Montessori School come on board and use the space for their cross country events and meetings for their environmental club. They’ve also undertaken to began planting spekbooms around the track. We would love for the community to make use of this space more often and be part of the heart of the community,” she said.
